Have you ever wanted to just belt out the songs of your favorite movies at the movie theater? Those pesky signs that tell you to be silent during the movie, the glares of the people around you, all make you feel somewhat self-conscious about doing it. Maybe the guy behind you who tells you to keep it quiet does it too. Then you need to go to a Sing-A-Long at the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood!
The El Capitan is owned and operated by the Walt Disney Company and shows first run movie premieres distributed by the film giant. But in-between showings of these popular movies, they often run some unique and fun programs like the Sing-A-Long. Emma and I went to see the Mary Poppins Sing-A-Long, having been inspired by the recent Saving Mr. Banks. It was a great opportunity to see this classic film on the big screen (and in the El Capitan, it is truly a big screen). More than that, it gave us the chance to sing those classic Sherman Brothers songs along with Julie, Dick, and the rest of the Mary Poppins cast. The words are put up on the screen for your convenience (no bouncing ball to guide you – that’s up to you). And you are welcome to sing it out loud to your heart’s content.
The El Capitan is a beautiful theater reminiscent of an idealized Hollywood movie palace from the 20’s. Every show is a show unto itself. It’s more than just a screen and a film. It’s an experience. Before the movie an organist plays Disney classics on a beautiful Wurlitzer that sounds amazing. After the organ disappears into the floor, the curtains begin to rise – curtains, plural. Each one is a different color revealing a different image until the final one that mimics the Hollywood skyline complete with lights. Needless to say the image quality and the sound are spectacular.
Of course, the theater is situated next to Disney’s Studio Store and Ghirardelli Soda Fountain. After you’ve had a chance to belt out some tunes, you might want to stop by for a pin traders sundae or other tasty treat. We didn’t need to because our movie came complete with complimentary popcorn! There were two different seating choices at our show – VIP and General Admission. VIP seats are reserved by seat number and are in prime locations. They include a small drink and popcorn. General admission is open seating – first come, first served. Prices vary by show – the Mary Poppins Sing-A-Long was $10 General Admission and $22 for VIP. The next one is coming up in a couple of weeks – a Frozen Sing-A-Long! We can’t wait to go. Will we see you there?
