Have you been “Pine”-ing for new Gravity Falls adventures? Saddened by the too soon ending of Dipper and Mabel’s adventures? Wishing Alex Hirsch would do a 180 and bring back the series? Well…that last one isn’t going to happen, but loyal fans just might get a new story to whet their insane appetite for the twins! As with everything else associated with the show, this new book featuring the time-traveling adventures of Dipper, Mabel, and Blendin Blandin is intriguing, quirky, sometimes a bit dark and twisted, but mostly fun! Based on the old “Choose Your Own Adventure” stories, this one is sub-titled “A ‘select your own choose-venture!'” And like those classic books, this one doesn’t all end with fairy tales and roses.

Title: Dipper and Mabel and the Curse of the Time Pirates’ Treasure!
Author: Jeffrey Rowe (with story contributions by Alex Hirsch); illustrated by Emmy Cicierega
Cost: $12.99
Age: 8-12 (or 35-55 or anyone who is a Gravity Falls fan)
Publisher: Disney Press
Genre: fiction, television
The endings in the book are fascinating. Some are status quo endings – everything goes back to the way it was. Some are deadly endings. And some are weird, different, and very much in the vein of a darker ending to Gravity Falls. There is ONE TRUE ENDING, but with multiple ways to achieve it. Even then, when you get to the end, there is a cryptic message: “Congratulations, dear reader. You’ve chosen wisely. But did you find a secret…?” I DON’T KNOW!!!

I literally tried to go through every iteration of the book and found an ending with a coded message that leads to a website (I won’t tell you the page or the website because you should find it on your own), but the website leads nowhere…or maybe I just haven’t figured it out yet. I found an ending that leads to a teased at sequel – but couldn’t find it listed on Amazon (is this just a tease or is there truly a sequel coming?). But have I found the secret? ARGH! Why do you do this to me Alex Hirsch?

Written by Jeffrey Rowe who was a writer for the show and illustrated by Emmy Cicierega who did storyboards for Gravity Falls (and who has such a cool name), the story has all the feel of a show (or many shows actually). The art is superb and looks even better than the quality work done for TV. To make it more interesting, Alex Hirsch contributed to the story. According to Hirsch, the book itself is considered non-canonical BUT has a CANONICAL SECRET hidden within its pages. The writer teased the secret on Twitter, but failed to reveal any other clues.

If you’re a fan of the show or “Choose Your Own Adventure” books, you’ll love this one. If you just like a fun read with great art, you’ll love this book, too. Either way, you should be running to Amazon to purchase it or at least to your local book store.
