Disney Villains – The Ones You Love to Hate

Either you love them or you hate them.  The villains of the Disney universe do not inspire a tepid response.  But as much as they are reviled for their evil ways, there are hardcore fans who love this group of downright dirty do-evilers.  For those fans (and for the good at heart who just want to understand these poor souls better), Jen Darcy has written a book for you!

Disney Villains is a beautiful book filled with iconic stills from the movies which feature these villains.  But more than that, the pages also contain concept art, live action photo reference material, storyboard sketches and more.  Chapters are divided up by type of villain; “Oh So Vain,” “All in the Family,” and “Law and Order” give you an idea of who you’ll find within.  But in case you can’t find them, there is a handy alphabetical index in the back of the book.  Each villain’s bio includes when they first appeared on the scene, the director of the film, the person who voiced them, and the animators who brought them to life.  Darcy puts a lot of work into each description, often including detailed information about the development or background of the character that went into making him or her the complete personification of evil that they are.

What I love about the book other than the bios are extras Jen peppers throughout the book.  She has a little section on “Easter Eggs” showing a few times when villains would show themselves in someone else’s movie.  She has a small feature on “Disney Villain Pets – Dogs vs. Cats.”  She includes a section about animated villains turned into live-action counterparts.  And even has a “Villains at the Parks” section with a look at past attractions and in the case of Shanghai ones that are brand new. This book which includes even characters from Zootopia is a fun read and worthwhile for any villains fan!
