Hamilton Comes Home – Premieres July 3rd on Disney+

The most groundbreaking musical of our generation!

When people use superlatives like that, I’m very hesitant, but from experience I have to say this could even be an understatement for HamiltonHamilton redefines the Broadway musical.  While it incorporates elements of traditional musicals, it adds hip-hop, rap, and other innovations you have never heard before on stage.  It appeals to a much more modern audience while at the same time still appealing to fans of Broadway.  It also draws people in with its diverse cast.  Ignoring ethnic stereotypes, people of all different colors portray real life historical figures.  It’s so amazing to see yourself in this rainbow of representation.  Plus, the music and the story and the songs are just GOOD!

Lin-Manuel Miranda is so talented.  An actual MacArthur Genius grant winner, his work is innovative and mesmerizing.  Who would have thought to write a musical around Alexander Hamilton, the guy on the two-dollar bill?  His ability to string words and music together is astounding all by itself.  Hamilton would be worth it just for that alone.  Hamilton comes in at 144 words per minute so there’s a lot of meat on those bones!  But the talent that is packed into this show is beyond just Miranda’s gifts.  The cast is also amazing.  Honestly, I can’t say enough about how great this show is.  If you haven’t seen it in the theater, you are in for a treat.  And for those of us who HAVE seen it in the theater, are you as excited as I am?

At one point, the hardest ticket in ANY town, and still a difficult seat to find, Disney+ is bringing this game-changing show to your home.  What’s more, we get to experience it with the original cast!  Along with Lin-Manuel Miranda are Phillipa Soo as Eliza, Leslie Odom, Jr. as Aaron Burr, Daveed Diggs as Lafayette, and Chris Jackson as George Washington just to name a few.  It will astound you the range of musical talent and music variation in this show.  From the melodious rap of “Cabinet Battle #1” to the fast-paced “Guns and Ships” (“Immigrants, we get the job done”) to the crooning sounds of “Helpless” this musical has it all.  Perhaps my favorite song is the ballad “Dear Theodosia” – a love letter from parent to child.

If America is the Great American Melting Pot, if we truly are the Land of Opportunity, then Hamilton embodies the development of that idea.  What a great way to celebrate Independence Day, especially in these troubled times.
