Ever since Disney acquired the rights to Star Wars and the other Lucasfilm properties, Star Wars characters have slowly been made a part of the Disney pantheon. From bit spots in Disney specials, integration into Disney commercials (love the Vader stuff) and of course, more Star Wars merchandise at the parks. If you have shopped at Star Traders in Tomorrowland, you already know what I’m talking about. New t-shirts, hats, toys, and action figures crossing the lines between classic Disney characters and Star Wars ones are in abundance. You might have even seen the “Build Your Own Lightsaber” area so you can be like Mace Windu, Yoda, or even Darth Maul. Well, Disneyland has something new for you Star Wars fans – Build Your Own Droid!

The Star Wars Droid Factory is located in the back of the main section of Star Traders and is incredibly fun. Kind of tucked away and not obvious as you walk in, this new merchandising feature let’s you build your own Kenner-like action figure! A Star Wars fan’s dream. Ever imagine your own droids growing up? Thinking you could have created a more stylish droid? Well, now you can show off your creative ability to the world (or at least your friends). Options are limited to non-bipedal droids so no C3PO styles available. But you can build an exact replica of R2D2, R5D4, or any other similar style. They have different colors, different styles, different heads and legs so you can mix and match in whatever way you like. They even have little head bling for your droid – mouse ear hats, Goofy hats, etc., often with Rebel logos on them. Go crazy and wild!
The cost is reasonable as well. At only $12.95 for one and $19.95 for a two-droid blister pack, it’s cheaper than a shirt or most plush. Cool thing about the packs? They look just like your action figures at home! Surprisingly detailed, you can see the servo-motors underneath the dome if you choose the see-through R2 head. Normally hidden, Disney’s attention to detail is in evidence with this concept. What was additionally fun for me was getting to further share my love of Star Wars with my daughter who also loves the Star Tours ride. It was great to spend the time together and explore our creativity. So what are you waiting for? Go adopt your droid today!
