I just read Papillon. And loved it. I’m not even a cat person and I loved it. I’m not sure what a cat person looks like, but I’ve usually been on the dog side of the fence. However, this book was so charming and adorable I wanted to share it with you so you could look for it in your local bookstore. Or order it online. Or do whatever you normally do to get books. If you have a small child or someone in your family does, it’s a great excuse to buy this book, but I have a feeling you’ll be enjoying this one for yourself.

The Very Fluffy Kitty Papillon is the story about a cat who is NOT fat, just fluffy. I can relate to that. Papillon is so fluffy that he has a problem with floating away. And in this book, that floating problem leads Papillon on a little adventure where he meets a new friend. It is a sweet, funny picture book with adorable illustrations and a cute simple idea. It’s one of those books that make for a great bedtime story, offering comfort and care.
The book is inspired by A.N. Kang’s own cat (who happens to also be named Papillon). People would routinely ask her how her cat got so fat and she would say, “She is not fat. She is just fluffy!” And hence a book was born. Her own cat had a talent for finding pennies. Kang wrote that Papillon would gather them from “all over the house and drop them in her food bowl. But of course if anyone was watching, she wouldn’t do it. So I used to fantasize about showing off Papillon’s talents, even imaginary ones.”

Kang is an accomplished illustrator and product designer, but had been working on this on the side. According to Publisher’s Weekly, this is part of a three book deal (and the book is titled “Book One”) so we have more Papillon to look forward to. In a letter to readers, Kang wrote about her thoughts behind the book. She wrote, “I believe we are all unique in our own ways. We may not love what makes us different, but when we embrace it, others will too. If you enjoy your journey, you will make great friends along the way. I hope The Very Fluffy Kitty Papillon will put a little smile on your face.” It did, Anna. It did.
