Topps Vault Disney: When It’s Just Too Much

These $1,200 boxes containing TWO cards are going for over $3,500 EACH!

I’m a huge Disney fan and I assume if you’re on this Disney Nerds website then you are, too. But it takes a level of insanity (or a certain amount of wealth) to invest in Topps Vault Disney. If you were lucky enough to buy it through Topps EQL lottery system you paid $1,199.00 for EACH box. And it’s a crime to call them a box when there are only two cards in each one. Now it’s a nice box – and some people on eBay are selling the empty box for $50 each, but two cards? You do get a box topper with original art by Julie Vu, but don’t let that term fool you. It’s not a hand-painted card or anything like that. It’s just a card with art created by Julie Vu and then printed on a press.

Now there are some pretty incredible cards in the set. You might get a relic-autograph card from the likes of Anne Hathaway, Johnny Depp, Owen Wilson or Jude Law which features their autograph AND a relic from the film. If you’re lucky you might even get a dual auto-relic and have Anne Hathaway AND Johnny Depp with a piece from the sets from the film. There are even a subset called Disney Diamonds which has actual diamonds embedded on the cards. Some of those also have autographs. So there is some inherent value in this set. But is it worth it for $1,200 let alone $3,500? No way.

Now this 1/1 card signed by Idina Menzel might be worth a pretty penny, but $3,500?

And don’t think you’ll get two of these treasures and get your money back because the first one is a base Disney Diamonds, True Greatness, Premiere Sketches, or Vault Relics card. Only in your second pack can you possible get the featured cards worth more. The odds of you getting the specific autograph you want is pretty slim. And you might get a dud card worth very little. It’s the ultimate $1,200 lottery ticket. There is a point when speculators will stop buying this stuff and try to sell it at even more exorbitant prices. And that’s when we stop buying them. My dad always said, “It’s only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.” And it’s true. By the way, you could probably go to D23 at the highest level, find many of the people on the checklist and get them to sign something more personal to you for $100 tops. Or get a selfie for the same. So don’t think you’re investing in the future. You’re just playing the lottery with a lot of money.
