Gigantic, Disney’s animated film based on the story of Jack and the Beanstalk, was pushed from its slated opening date in March 2018 to November of that same year. The reason? Wreck-It Ralph. Ralph is coming back to the big screen in a currently untitled sequel to the 2012 hit. Wreck-It Ralph told the story of a villainous arcade game character who was tired of being the bad guy and wanted instead to be the hero. Ralph is the foil of the Fix-It Felix, Jr. stand-up console game and while everyone loves Felix, Ralph is an outcast and is tired of it. He decides to find a way to be the hero and abandons his game. Along the way he meets Vanellope von Schweetz, a “glitchy” character who is outcast by the other racers in her video game Sugar Rush. Together, these two lonely souls find true friendship and the real meaning of what a hero is.

Wreck-It Ralph earned $471 million in its original release (a nice amount for an animated film until superstar giants like Frozen and Zootopia broke the billion dollar mark). Disney is hoping to rekindle the love of Ralph’s adoring fans with a sequel to come out in March 9, 2018. Both John C. Reilly (who played Ralph) and Sarah Silverman (who portrayed Vanellope) have signed on to return. No word yet if other fan favorites Jane Lynch (Calhoun) or Jack McBrayer (Felix) will return. Rich Moore, who directed the original and directed the smash hit Zootopia will be returning but with a new co-director, writer Phil Johnston who wrote the original scripts for both Wreck-It Ralph and Zootopia. In a press conference, Reilly said, “Ralph is a character very near and dear to my heart. I’m really looking forward to playing the big lug again. Making the first Wreck-It Ralph was one of the most special experiences I’ve ever had and I’m really looking forward to bringing him back to life. So many kids I’ve met all over the world are excited to see him again, too. They tell me all the time!”

This time out, Ralph is hitting the Internet! The details of the plot and the direction of the new film have not been announced yet. In a special promotion for the news of Ralph’s new movie, the character will randomly appear in Disney’s hit app, Disney Crossy Road at 12pm PST (June 30, 2016) and ‘wreck’ the game. With all of the different Disney apps on the market, Ralph could potentially encounter other Disney characters like Mickey and Friends (like in Disney Magical Dice), Star Wars characters from the dozens of Star Wars related games, Marvel super-heroes, and the list is endless. Ralph previously had his own app (a recreation of the game in the movie) on digital platforms but it is no longer supported or available (although you can still play it if you previously downloaded it). What characters would you like to see in Ralph’s new movie?
