Nightmare Before Christmas Pop-Up Book is a Dream!

Quite possibly the best pop-up book ever!

Matthew Reinhart does it again with an amazing pop-up book about The Nightmare Before Christmas.  As usual, Matthew takes the creative development of a pop-up book to new levels.  But this book is even more remarkable than others he has done.  The level of craftsmanship involved is mind-boggling.  The artwork is top notch but of course what is most impressive are the different interactive elements in the book.  This is a must-have gift for the Jack Skellington fan in your life (or a great present for yourself).

Title: Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas Pop-Up
Author: Matthew Reinhart
Cost: $65 (not a typo – but it is available on Amazon for $39)
Age: 12 and up
Publisher: Disney Press
Genre: Fiction; Film & TV

The price is high.  There’s no doubt about that.  But it’s worth it.  The cost is determined by the complexity and engineering of the pieces.  The more interactive the book, the more it costs to produce, and this book has a ton of different interactive elements.  From unfolding 3-D pop-ups to tab pulls that lead to even more impressive pop-ups to hidden scenes behind story flaps, there is a lot packed into the five giant scenes that make up this book.

Matthew’s creativity is evident in each page.  What is even more impressive is that he creates the entire book.  He not only engineers the pop-ups, but he also writes and draws each page.  And he has an incredible attention to detail.  His paper sculptures have artwork from every angle.  If you rotate the book you’ll see little nuggets on the backside, underneath, and in-between depending on the scene.  The book is impressive in every way.

In this scene, even the carousel moves as the book is opened. Clever tabs and hidden scenes abound in this book.

This isn’t a typical pop-up you’d buy for your children.  While it does have many elements of a book made for young children, it is far more sophisticated.  But it’s also durable.  If your kids want to play with it, they can have hours of fun.  But this really is a fan book that brings the movie to life in a different way.  If you’re a fan of the film, this will be a welcome addition to your library.
